QSense Motion Intelligence Platform โ€“ Technical Overview

The QSense platform is a modular, high-performance motion intelligence system designed for accurate, real-time human motion capture in demanding real-world environments. It combines wearable IMU hardware, wireless communication, embedded processing, synchronization technology, open APIs, and tooling into a single coherent ecosystem.

This page provides a technical overview of how the QSense platform is structured, how data flows through the system, and how the components work together โ€“ from sensor to application, from prototype to product.

1. Platform Overview

At its core, the QSense platform is built to answer one question:

How do we reliably capture, synchronize, process and expose human motion data in environments where accuracy, timing and robustness matter?

To achieve this, QSense combines:

  • High-performance wearable IMU sensors
  • Real-time wireless communication
  • Deterministic time synchronization
  • Embedded firmware & motion algorithms
  • Open SDKs and APIs
  • Visualization, setup and logging tools
  • OEM & scale-up support

All components are designed to work seamlessly together, while remaining modular and open for integration into your own systems.

2. System Architecture

The QSense platform follows a layered architecture:

a) Sensor Layer โ€“ Wearable IMU Devices

At the edge of the system are the QSense wearable IMU sensors. Each sensor integrates:

  • 3-axis accelerometer
  • 3-axis gyroscope
  • 3-axis magnetometer (optional use)
  • Embedded processing
  • Wireless BLE 5.2 communication
  • Local storage and control interfaces

These sensors are designed for:

  • low drift
  • low latency
  • high mechanical stability
  • long-duration wearable use
  • indoor and outdoor environments

b) Communication Layer โ€“ Wireless Transport

QSense uses BLE 5.2 as the primary wireless transport layer. Depending on configuration, data is transmitted:

  • directly to a PC, tablet or mobile device
  • via the QSense BLE dongle for maximum throughput and stability
  • to the FieldSync Hub for fully portable, computer-free operation

The communication layer supports:

  • high data rates (up to 2 Mbps)
  • multi-sensor setups
  • deterministic connection intervals
  • time-synchronized operation

c) Firmware & Processing Layer

Each QSense sensor runs embedded firmware responsible for:

  • sensor configuration
  • data acquisition
  • buffering and streaming
  • time synchronization
  • algorithm execution (e.g. Madgwick fusion)
  • quality monitoring

This layer is optimized for:

  • real-time operation
  • low power consumption
  • predictable timing behavior

d) Synchronization Layer โ€“ QSync Architecture

Accurate motion analysis depends on accurate timing.

QSense implements a dedicated synchronization architecture (QSync) that supports:

  • continuous wireless clock synchronization across sensors
  • absolute timestamping of all data samples
  • sub-millisecond inter-sensor alignment

Two main modes are supported:

TimeSync Mode

  • Continuous runtime synchronization
  • Typical accuracy < 60 ยตs (max < 150 ยตs)
  • For research-grade analysis and multi-modal fusion

Low Latency Mode

  • Minimal end-to-end delay
  • Local timestamps per sensor
  • Drift โ‰ค 2 ms per minute
  • For closed-loop and interactive applications

This enables clean alignment with:

  • EMG
  • ECG / PPG
  • force plates
  • video
  • external triggers

e) SDK & API Layer โ€“ Data Access

QSense exposes motion data through open, documented interfaces.

Available interfaces include:

  • C# / .NET API
  • Unity integration
  • Python interface (for research)
  • MATLAB interface (on request)
  • Native iOS API (beta)

The API layer allows you to:

  • configure devices
  • control streaming and logging
  • access raw or fused data
  • manage multi-sensor setups
  • retrieve metadata and quality indicators

QSense APIs are designed to be:

  • transparent
  • deterministic
  • developer-friendly
  • suitable for production systems

f) Application & Tooling Layer

On top of the platform, QSense provides tools for:

  • sensor assignment and calibration
  • live 3D visualization
  • recording and export
  • system validation

This includes:

  • Windows setup & visualization application
  • Mobile demo applications
  • FieldSync Hub interface
  • High-speed download tooling
  • Example applications and reference implementations

These tools accelerate setup, reduce integration friction and support validation.

3. Data Flow โ€“ From Sensor to Application

A typical data path in the QSense platform looks like this:

  1. IMU sensor captures acceleration, angular velocity and magnetic field
  2. Firmware processes data
  3. (Optional) fusion algorithms compute orientation
  4. Samples are timestamped and synchronized
  5. Data is transmitted wirelessly via BLE
  6. Data is received by dongle, hub or native BLE stack
  7. API layer exposes data to your application
  8. Your application processes, visualizes or stores the data

This architecture supports:

  • real-time streaming
  • offline logging (using the FieldSync HUB)
  • hybrid workflows
  • closed-loop feedback systems

4. Data Types & Output Formats

Different applications require different data representations. QSense supports:
