FieldSync HUB

Portable, Wearable Motion Capture — Built for the Field

Lab-grade motion capture, without the lab.

Traditional IMU motion capture systems rely on laptops, tablets, or smartphones to collect data. In real-world environments, this quickly becomes a liability: connections drop, batteries drain, screens interfere with movement, and setups break down.

FieldSync is designed to remove that dependency entirely.

FieldSync is a fully self-contained, wearable IMU motion capture system that records synchronized motion data directly to a dedicated central HUB — no computer, phone, or external device required during measurement. This makes it ideal for outdoor, mobile, and performance-critical applications where freedom of movement and reliability matter most.

What makes FieldSync different

Why FieldSync exists

When motion capture leaves the lab, things tend to When motion capture leaves the lab, things tend to break:

  • devices disconnect
  • screens interfere with movement
  • batteries run out
  • environments become unpredictable

FieldSync is built specifically to solve these problems.

It enables high-quality motion capture where performance actually happens — on the field, in daily life, or throughout rehabilitation — without compromising data quality or workflow simplicity.

QSync - Precision IMU Time Synchronization for Research

Built for real-world research and performance

FieldSync is designed for applications where traditional motion capture systems fall short:

  • Long-duration or mobile measurement sessions
  • Sports performance & training
  • Outdoor biomechanics studies
  • Ergonomics and occupational research
  • Rehabilitation and return-to-play monitoring

The result: reliable motion capture, without compromises.

FieldSync System Overview

The FieldSync wearable IMU motion capture system consists of:

  • One FieldSync HUB, and
  • Up to nine wireless QSense IMU sensors

Integrated IMU in the HUB

The FieldSync HUB itself contains a built-in 9-DOF IMU, allowing it to function both as:

  • the central data collection and synchronization unit, and
  • an additional motion sensor.

This enables configurations of up to 10 synchronized IMU sensing devices in total (9 QSense sensors + the HUB), all sharing the same high-precision time base.

Each IMU measures linear acceleration, rotational velocity, and magnetic orientation, while the HUB maintains continuous real-time synchronization across the entire sensor network.

Overall System Setup

FieldSync IMU HUB System

Continuous Real-Time Sensor Time Synchronization

Unlike systems that synchronize sensors only at start-up, the FieldSync HUB continuously synchronizes the internal clocks of all connected IMUs throughout the entire recording.

  • Typical inter-sensor synchronization accuracy: ~60 µs
  • Maximum inter-sensor synchronization error: <150 µs

This prevents temporal drift and sample misalignment — a critical requirement for reliable multi-segment kinematic analysis in biomechanics, sports science, and rehabilitation.

Data Formats and Algorithms

Data formats and algorithms

FieldSync supports multiple data representations from the same recording:

  • Raw IMU data (accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer)
  • Quaternion orientation (6-DOF or 9-DOF Madgwick)
  • Mixed modes (raw + orientation)

Sample rates are configurable (typically 50–100 Hz, application-dependent), allowing you to balance data fidelity, battery life, and storage requirements.

Live preview and setup assurance

Before starting a full recording, FieldSync offers a low-data-rate live preview (~5 sps) to verify:

  • correct sensor placement
  • sensor connectivity
  • battery and system status

This minimizes setup errors and ensures clean data capture from the start.

Monitoring and control

The FieldSync system supports:

  • real-time battery and sensor status monitoring
  • configuration and control via BLE
  • optional viewing of status information on a smartphone or tablet

A mobile device is not required during recording.

Advanced offline data processing

After recording, data is downloaded via the docking station as standard file storage. Offline analysis can be performed using:

  • MATLAB
  • Python
  • custom analysis software
  • biomechanics and motion analysis toolchains

This supports advanced modeling, AI algorithm development, and comprehensive reporting — without forcing a specific software ecosystem.

Motion Capture Where Performance Happens

FieldSync is built to move motion capture out of controlled laboratory environments and into real life.

Athletes, coaches, clinicians, and researchers can capture high-quality motion data during natural movement — training, competition, rehabilitation, or daily activities — while maintaining precise timing and data integrity.

At the core of the system, the FieldSync HUB continuously synchronizes all connected IMUs to a shared time reference. This enables accurate analysis of complex, multi-joint motion and ensures a consistent, reliable representation of movement beyond the lab.

Measure movement where it matters — not just where it’s easy.
