Data & Output Formats

IMU Data Output Formats — Open, Flexible and Designed to Integrate

QSense is designed as an open motion intelligence platform. We provide full access to high-quality motion data in multiple formats, enabling seamless integration into analytics pipelines, clinical systems, performance tools and commercial products.

Whether you need raw sensor signals for research, fused kinematics for biomechanics, BVH for skeletal motion representation, or real-time orientation data for interactive applications – QSense delivers motion data in the format that fits your workflow.

We don’t lock you into predefined dashboards or closed pipelines. You stay in control of your data and your roadmap.

From Raw Signals to Actionable Insight

Motion data is only valuable if it fits your application. Research, clinical decision-making, real-time training systems and embedded products all require different representations of motion. QSense is designed to support the full spectrum – from raw inertial signals to high-level kinematic and skeletal outputs.

You choose:

  • what data you receive
  • at what rate
  • in which format
  • and how you process it

We don’t lock you into predefined dashboards or closed pipelines.

Supported Output Types

Raw Sensor Data

Ideal when algorithmic control, validation and traceability are critical.

Access unprocessed accelerometer, gyroscope and (optionally) magnetometer signals directly from the sensors.

Use raw data when you need:

  • full control over filtering and fusion
  • custom algorithm development
  • validation and research-grade analysis
  • signal-level feature extraction

Raw access enables complete transparency and reproducibility.

Fused Kinematic Data

Optimized for workflows where interpretability and speed matter.

QSense provides real-time fused outputs combining inertial signals into stable orientation and motion estimates.

Use fused data for:

  • biomechanical analysis
  • posture and movement assessment
  • clinical evaluation
  • workload and ergonomic studies

Fused outputs reduce processing overhead while maintaining high fidelity.

Quaternion Orientation Data (6DoF / 9DoF)

Designed for systems where orientation drives interaction or control logic.
QSense supports both 6-DoF and 9-DoF quaternion outputs for real-time orientation tracking.

This is ideal for:

  • motion capture
  • XR / simulation environments
  • robotics and control systems
  • real-time coaching and feedback applications

Quaternion outputs are available for both streaming and logging.

BVH (Biovision Hierarchy) Format

Enables immediate use in skeleton-based pipelines without conversion overhead.

QSense supports export to BVH (Biovision Hierarchy) format for full-body motion representation. BVH is widely used in biomechanics, animation, simulation and XR pipelines, enabling seamless integration with third-party tools and visualization environments.

Use BVH when you need:

  • skeletal motion representation for analysis or visualization
  • compatibility with animation and simulation tools
  • integration with XR environments and digital humans
  • straightforward exchange with biomechanics and motion analysis software

BVH export allows QSense motion data to be used directly in external pipelines without additional conversion steps.

Mixed Mode Outputs

Combine raw, fused and quaternion data streams in a single session.

This allows:

  • real-time application control using fused data
  • simultaneous raw data logging for post-processing
  • hybrid workflows for research and product development

One platform, multiple data strategies.

Sampling Rates & Data Resolution

QSense supports configurable sampling rates from low-frequency monitoring to high-resolution motion analysis.

Typical ranges:

  • 1 – 800 Hz depending on configuration and sensor count
  • multi-sensor setups supported with deterministic, platform-level timing
  • consistent timestamps across all data streams

This enables both:

  • long-term monitoring
  • high-speed biomechanical analysis

without changing hardware.

Synchronized Timestamps

All data streams are time-aligned using QSense’s synchronization architecture.

This enables:

  • frame-accurate multi-sensor fusion
  • clean alignment with external systems (EMG, ECG, force plates, video, etc.)
  • reliable event detection and phase analysis

The same output formats are available whichever way the data is captured: streamed live over wireless BLE, recorded in the internal memory of each sensor on a shared time base, or recorded centrally on the QSense FieldSync HUB. Recordings are downloaded into the QSense Motion application afterwards and exported in the same CSV format as streamed data.

For details, see Synchronization & Timing.

Designed for System Integration – Not Just Data Export

QSense is built to be embedded in your systems.

We provide:

  • open SDKs
  • documented APIs
  • reference implementations
  • example code for Python, MATLAB, Unity and more

This enables integration into:

  • research pipelines
  • clinical systems
  • analytics platforms
  • digital health solutions
  • training and simulation environments
  • OEM products

We support you from proof-of-concept to production.

Typical Integration Scenarios

QSense data is integrated into:

  • biomechanics analysis pipelines
  • rehabilitation platforms and EHR-linked systems
  • sports performance dashboards
  • ergonomic assessment tools
  • XR training environments
  • robotics and control systems
  • wearable and IoT products

Whether standalone or as part of a larger system, QSense fits into your architecture. QSense is often used as the motion layer within larger digital, clinical or operational platforms.

Open by Design

We believe that your data – and your algorithms – should remain yours.

QSense does not lock you into proprietary formats or closed ecosystems. Our platform is designed to support:

  • transparent data access
  • reproducible research
  • flexible product architectures
  • long-term scalability

You stay in control of your data and your roadmap.
